Some common forms of birth injuries include:
- Cerebral Palsy
- Erb's Palsy
- Shoulder Dystocia
- Facial Paralysis
- Brachial Plexus Injuries
- Fetal Death (before or after childbirth)
Inadequate or improper care during labor and delivery can cause serious physical harm to the mother or child, or both. When this occurs, it is referred to as a birth injury. Birth injuries can cause nerve damage, brain damage, broken bones, and even maternal or fetal death.
Problems With Labor & Delivery
An infant can sustain brain injuries during the childbirth process due to three main causes: reduced oxygen, trauma, and reduced glucose. Essentially, anything that interferes with the delivery of oxygen to the baby can start the cycle of brain injury, including anything that interferes with the mother's supply of oxygen to the placenta.
Inappropriate use of Pitocin (Oxytocin) can be very serious and impair the placenta's ability to deliver oxygen to the baby. Excessive Pitocin can reduce the placenta's ability to replenish the baby's oxygen supply and lead to brain damage or death. Vaginal delivery after prior caesarian section (VBAC) increases the risk of placental abruption, which could cause the baby to suffer brain damage. Additionally, the occurrence of uterine rupture is much higher when Pitocin is used in a VBAC setting. Other common causes of birth injuries include umbilical cord compression and trauma caused by various forces being exerted upon the baby such as inappropriate use of vacuum extractors and forceps, which can cause strokes, nerve damage, and permanent brain damage.
