A man who ran his truck into a crowd of New Orleans pedestrians at a Mardi Gras parade last year has been sentenced.

Neilson Rizzuto, 26, was sentenced for the Mardi Gras car accident that injured more than 30 people during the Endymion parade during the 2017 Mardi Gras season. He was sentenced to five years, but suspended one year and the judge gave credit for 11 months already served. Rizzuto had a blood-alcohol level of .232 percent at the time of the New Orleans car crash. That’s nearly 3 times over the legal limit.

To his credit Neilson apologized, and read off the names of the victims in court.

Mardi Gras begins February 13th. New Orleans is probably the most popular spot for Mardi Gras celebrations so it’s important to be safe and practice save driving to avoid car accidents and crashes on Mardi Gras.
